Also, I think local references can be a little annoying unless you are living away, then they are more fun. Most of Hume was new to me, and I enjoyed those aspects but as a novel it just didn't work entirely, esp the women, who are for the most part rather dull and cliched. I was going to give it 6, but have found myself thinking about the characters after finishing, so am giving it 7 instead. Edgar was limp as w...Yes, I think I agree with you. Edgar was limp as well as limpid. I especially liked the references to well-kent bits of Edinburgh and especially the decaying David Hume Tower.
