On 'Mme Bovary' & Living with Rufus & Martha

I just watched 'Madame Bovary', it came free with the Independent this weekend. I love Isabelle Huppert, the way she can look plain and beautiful in the same moment. All I could remember from my French lectures was that Emma Bovary hates her husband, there's a guy with a club foot, and she takes arsenic at end. Oh, and Flaubert uses style indirect libre, I remembered that too, how useful! On the subject of unrequited passion, I think I love both Martha and Rufus Wainwright, I wish they could be my flatmates and sing to me all the time.

Oh I'm jealous, I love that film.
I only get the odd DVD from the Observer. I love all the Wainwrights, thought Martha singing with Snow patrol was great a few weeks ago on TV.

Do you like Damien Rice, he's new album looks like it will be as good as O. I just bought the advance track on i-tunes, 9 crimes - I love it already.

the wedding sounds lovely, hope you're not too knackered.

Hi NMJ
Been reading your blog for a while and thought it was about time I said hello. I bought the Independent on Sat. for the CD - still to watch it. I have ME too and studied French at the same time as you (Strathyclyde). I did my year out in Paris then another 4 years after grad. Sorry you didn't manage to complete your year. Some students from my year must have been in Caen around the same time as you (1982-83?). Would love to chat about all things French any time. It's 17 years since I've been there thanks to the DD. Anyway, this is turning into a book. Ciara has my email addy. Really enjoy your blog.
