Magic: How to Make an Illness Disappear!

Am linking to  Professor Malcolm Hooper's complaint to the MRC: Magical Medicine: How to Make a Disease Disappear. And thanks to Nicky for pointing out the report to me in the first place. Wonder if the boys at BMJ will be reading Professor Hooper's words...

The irony is that so many well accepted illnesses are genuinely psychological at root.

I just got off the phone to my dad - he was imparting the news that he has just been diagnosed with diabetes, with the extent to be confirmed on thursday.

He also has an 11 year old triple bypass which is showing signs of wear and tear.

He was lamenting the fact that he might never be allowed pudding again, and then laughing at himself because he said that 11 years ago...

We've got some family DNA based weaknesses for sure, but his health problems are largely the result of lifestyle. And lifestyle is an expression of psychology. He's going to see if he can rejoin the heart disease support group. Can't hurt.

I have no doubt that therapy, graded exercise, CBT and a change in attitude is all we need to cure the country of both heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Heart disease alone costs the UK 30 billion squid a year... nearly enough to bail out a high street bank!

At least you lot just malinger, and don't demand expensive bypasses and amputations.

And looking at the bigger picture - the idea that the DWP might be able to influence medical research is terrifying.

Hey Stray, In a way I feel lucky I got ME so long ago, at least in 1983 we were referred to neurologists to be properly diagnosed. Then in late 80s the psychiatrists hijacked the illness for their own very dodgy, sinister purposes. None of it makes sense. None of it. I am so sapped by their nonsense. I try not to get upset every time a new article/comment raises its ugly head, but it's hard not to. How dare they continue to derail research into this fucking awful illness. How dare they.

Another chilling post from Sandman - on the secret MRC files on ME.

I don't know anymore how we can fight these medical criminals.

Crikey. The secret file stuff is just bizarre isn't it? Why on earth they can justify a 73 year lock down I don't know - did they take sensitive testimony from highly qualified 3 year olds?

I can understand your frustration a little - having had to fight bloody hard to get anyone to bother to look keenly enough at Master M to notice his disability. The whole 'I don't see it' 'But you aren't looking' 'Yes, but there's no point looking because I don't see it' argument is crazy-making.

The lock down is so that when the papers see the light of day all of us will be dead. No one to kick up a stink - and no one to be accountable - about how they had systematically gone about reclassifying a neurological illness as psychiatric.

Hold on to hope for reclassification. Tourette's was a psychiatric disorder until fairly recently. In fact - Badger's psychiatrist attempted (only about 4 years ago) to tell her that

a) she didn't have it because she already had too many other things

and b) it was a psychiatric disorder and she didn't fit his definition because she didn't swear (at that time) and failed to produce symptoms in his office.

Fortunately we had practiced for this and she simply said 'It has been reclassified as a neurological disorder and I would like a referral to a neurologist.' The neurologist was able to identify abnormal levels of dopamine and other hormones. But if you don't test then you don't know...

In many ways you face the same problem as tourettes folk did for years - because it *is* neurological, and neurology is the foundation of our being, there is no treatment which has zero impact, and thus any one who wants to co-opt it into their discipline can erroneously do so with circumstantial evidence.

Tourettes is worse under stress. Hell, so does is asthma and eczema - oh, and my dad's angina... why don't we just reclassify everything as psychiatric and be done with it... ?

The problem with the official secrets act and so on is that it's only effective while people have enough to lose. At some point someone is going to have nothing to lose and come clean. I just hope it's sooner rather than later.

Hey Stray, The fury is that ME *is* classified as neurological by the World Health Organisation - and has been since 1969. That it is neurological is supported by all those who suffer from it, and 4000 odd research papers. But the psychs constantly deny & ignore the evidence, for their own ends. They invented an illness known as CFS in late 80s - which really anyone could have, you need to be a bit tired and a bit depressed- and have been deliberately & misleadingly confusing it with ME ever since. Prof Hooper is right when he equates their tactics to those of Holocaust deniers. Their position will crumble at some point, truth always outs in the end.

Ah yes, I know - but what do the WHO know when compared with the great and the good of the British GMC?

They call themselves scientists, but the fundamental principle of science is that your result can be replicated by anyone with the right equipment and materials. Rules of science do not magically alter when they cross national borders. And without repeatable measurable results, you only have a theory, a hunch.

The lack of acknowledgment of doubt by psychiatrists, when they do not do real science, would be seen as a clear indication of insanity in their patients...

I love the poem about the penguins I have seen about this. Sums it up perfectly.

Yes, the penguin poem is fabulous, it is here!
